CompuVault – Your Solution For Online Data Backup and Restoration

CompuVault logoCompuVault’s primary business is providing disk-to-disk-backup solutions. Our service is offered through channel partners. Partners build the end-user relationships; CompuVault provides a best-in-class structure to accommodate the requirement.

CompuVault was originally a service offering of its sister company, Compunite Computers, Inc., one of the premier network service companies in the NYC/NJ metropolitan area. The CompuVault solution was tailored from Compunite’s many years of networking experience and support for hundreds of clients’ backup needs. While it was originally designed to support Compunite clients, CompuVault met with such overwhelmingly positive acceptance that it was spun off in early 2007 in order to better serve its channel partners.

CompuVault has two main components, a DS-client and a DS-system. The DS-client is installed on a CompuVault-provided appliance which is installed at the end-user’s location. Backups are configured through an easy-to-use GUI : you select what is being backed up, backup frequency, and how many local copies are kept. Clients may even choose options for CDP (continuous data protection). Other customizable features are also included.

Once the appliance is configured, the initial backup takes place. The entire data set is compressed and encrypted as it is backed up. It is then moved to the DS-system in CompuVault’s state-of-the-art data center. CompuVault has an optional mobile seed device which can be used for the first backup if there is a large volume of data, or if the client’s Internet connection does not support volume data transfers.

After the initial backup is completed, CompuVault’s DS-client picks out just the Delta changes, which are smaller than the incremental changes utilized by most other backup technologies. For example: A client opens a 5MB spreadsheet file, adds data which results in the file's size increasing to 5.2MB. In an incremental backup, the entire 5.2MB file would be moved, but only the .2MB increase will be moved with in a delta-based backup. This means that larger amounts of data can be backed up over smaller bandwidth and that the true data footprint is much smaller than that of other technologies.

Data Recovery

Since CompuVault uses an appliance approach, the end user has many recovery options. Everything from full bare metal recoveries to simple file restores are supported by the technology. Local copies are also stored on the appliance, resulting in extremely fast disk-to-disk restores on the LAN.

Mobile vault recovery is an added option available to users. In case of a full site loss, CompuVault can ship a new DS-Client appliance containing complete data sets and ready to be restored. This appliance can be shipped via optional carrier to help the customer recover the data at the location of their choice.
